Technology
Velkess has developed a
novel approach to large scale energy storage that is able to provide the
electrical grid with stored power at a fraction of the cost, and at significantly
better efficiency than the best presently available commercial technologies.
The Velkess patent pending
energy storage system is a new kind of kinetic flywheel that stores large
quantities of energy in the momentum of a massive spinning wheel. Velkess's
approach is a radical improvement on existing flywheel technologies, which are
universally far too expensive to address the bulk energy storage needs of
the electrical system.
Velkess's
technologies provide substantial improvements in stability, safety, ease of
manufacture, and most importantly, cost over traditional flywheel systems.
Rock Solid Safety & Stability
Velkess's Flexible Flywheel
configuration is entirely self-stabilizing. It gains stability as it rotates,
in the same way that a cowboy's lasso does. Because the Velkess system is
inherently stable and does not require any outside energy or management to maintain
that stability, energy can be held on the rotor with complete safety, even in the
event of a total loss of system power, massive earthquake, or both at the same
time. Because of this rock solid stability, the Velkess system can store large
quantities of energy with the utmost dependability.
Dramatically Lower Cost
Velkess's novel flywheel
system is able to deliver energy storage services at a small fraction of the
cost of current commercially available systems. This radical reduction in cost
comes directly from Velkess's innovative approach and novel technologies,
including our Flexible Flywheel Rotor and High Efficiency Motor/Generator. All of
Velkess's technologies have been specifically designed around the most
efficient possible use of materials, ease of manufacture, and extremely high
efficiency operation.
Flexible Flywheel Rotor
The flywheel rotor itself is
the fundamental component in a flywheel energy storage system. Velkess's novel
flywheel rotor is made in a flexible configuration that avoids many of the
pitfalls of rigid rotor designs. Additionally, it allows for the use of a far wider range of
materials and enables more complete use of the rotor
material's full potential. Furthermore, because Velkess's patent pending flywheel
is self-balancing and simple to manufacture, the cost of production is
significantly reduced. These features together allow Velkess's system to
provide safe, efficient, large scale energy storage at a radically lower cost than any currently available
alternative technology.
High Efficiency & Low
Cost Electric Motor/Generator
The electric
motor/generator is the part of the flywheel energy storage system that allows energy to be
deposited and withdrawn. Traditional
electromagnetic motor/generator technology requires designers to choose between
high efficiency/high cost or low efficiency/low cost systems. Using a
novel design, Velkess has developed a motor/generator that is
both low cost and high efficiency. This "win-win" design allows
Velkess to provide high availability power at radically lower cost than any of the
currently available alternatives.
